Monster.com 2006 Pricing

Lots of people have talked about the recent price increase on Monster.com (postings going from $395 to $475). Well for companies who want to keep paying 2006 single job pricing they should take a detour to www.jobs.com and click on "Post A Job". When they get there they will notice the ability to post a job to Monster and to Jobs.com for $395. Now that I have pointed it out I'm sure Monster will change this, but take advantage of it while you can.

Oh, and take special notice that a Monster sister site is offering job postings for $25. What if companies boycotted Monster and just started posting on Jobs.com?

Active candidates go where the jobs are!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Recruitment Videos

Until recently I had never been a big fan of spending the money on recruitment videos. I felt they were a waste of time and that no one would ever see them unless you had an open house or had them playing at a job fair. Well because of YouTube my feelings have changed. Visitors to YouTube view over 100 million videos a day. Companies trying to be innovative, and those working on improving their employment brands should sign up for a YouTube account and get their recruitment videos on the site.

So far LAPD has three of the best recruitment videos I have seen. The videos are really exciting. For a few moments I wanted to be an LAPD officer.

Remember there is more to online recruiting than job postings and resume access!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yahoo/HotJobs

When Yahoo purchased HotJobs.com in December 2001 many people in the online recruitment industry felt it was the perfect acquisition. The # 1 site on the internet (Yahoo) joining forces with the # 2 site for online recruitment.

Well after 5 years I can tell you that the acquisition has been far from perfect, and I really question what management at Yahoo/HotJobs is doing with the site. They've dropped from the # 2 online recruitment site to a distant # 3 in just a few years.

I did a little research on Alexa to see if HotJobs was even one of the top destinations on Yahoo. The results of the research are below. Just a hint, HotJobs isn't on the list.

mail.yahoo.com - 51%
search.yahoo.com - 10%
bid.yahoo.com - 4%
news.yahoo.com - 3%
login.yahoo.com - 2%
yahoo.com - 2%
auctions.yahoo.com - 2%
knowledge.yahoo.com - 2%
finance.yahoo.com - 1%

If Yahoo really wants HotJobs to return to their past glory they need to do something different (giving away free jobs and letting companies refresh their postings on a regular basis isn't working).

I have been hearing a lot of talk in the industry about Yahoo making jobs from HotJobs available to people who are visiting other areas of their site (Yahoo Finance, Yahoo Fantasy Sports, Yahoo Mail, etc). This is a wonderful idea, given the fact that many passive candidates visit these areas on a regular basis. Companies could target their audience, and truly reach that ever elusive passive candidate.

It will be very interesting to see what they decide to do.

A Recruiting Take Away From a Direct Mail Sales Flyer

If you are like most people in America you are constantly being bombarded with direct mail pieces from every retail, mortgage, and credit card company in the world. 99.99999% of the time those pieces of mail end up in the trash, and you take no action on their offer. Well yesterday one of my coworkers brought one in that I thought was awesome and obviously he did too seeing as he brought it to work to show the entire office.

The mailer did two things I really liked. 1. It had his first name in large bold print (not that many of the others I've received haven't) 2. It had a map from his house directly to the store. It also had written directions. (Personalization at its best)

Now I know that this mailer went out to thousands of other people in my coworkers area, but it caught his attention enough to bring it to the office and show us.

How does this relate to recruiting?

Well for those of you out there who go to job fairs and do open houses to recruit, this little act of personalization could be a good way for you to get more people coming by your booths and to your recruiting events. Just think if a company sent you a direct mailer and it had directions from your house to their recruiting event. Would it make you say? "Wow" or "How cool is that."

Personalizing recruiting materials is a way for your company to stand out in the crowd. It may take a little extra time and cost more money but in the long run the return could be huge.
